Opportunity Hides In Plain Sight

Monday, November 13, 2023

In the training session conducted on 4 November 2023, the key takeaway was that there is one thing standing in the way of you reaching your potential in your current position, and that is a broken relationship. Take ownership to have the crucial conversation required to mend it, and it may turn a frustrating job into a deeply satisfying one!

Troy Heiner

In last week’s training session, I explored a crucial aspect of career growth: identifying and overcoming the barriers that prevent us from seizing opportunities within our current workplaces. This exploration was framed through a personal anecdote, a poignant career-defining moment from my journey, which illuminates the often-overlooked dynamics of workplace advancement.

A Cautionary Tale

My career-defining moment revolved around a significant challenge during a major government reorganization. I was part of the Technology Directorate, a unit formed to spearhead a transformative project. Initially, the process was manageable with five projects, but as the projects grew to nearly fifty, the focus shifted from delivery to perpetual testing and integration. This shift caused frustration among my team as their efforts rarely made it to production, stalling their contribution to meaningful mission work.

Communication: The Hidden Key to Progress

This experience underscored a vital lesson: often, the biggest hurdle in career advancement is communication, or the lack thereof. In my case, challenging the status quo led to exclusion from strategic discussions, but it also highlighted the importance of having crucial conversations, even if they are uncomfortable. The willingness to speak up and challenge existing norms can be a catalyst for change, both personally and organizationally.

Taking Ownership of Your Path

The session emphasized the importance of taking ownership of your career trajectory. This means actively seeking opportunities, engaging in difficult conversations, and expanding your professional network. I discussed the power of mentorship, advocating for a diverse set of mentors who can provide varied perspectives and guidance.

Crucial Conversations: The Gateway to Growth

Drawing from the insights of "Crucial Conversations" by Kerry Patterson and others, we emphasized the importance of engaging in challenging but necessary dialogues. These conversations, while intimidating, often pave the way for breakthroughs and progress. It's about preparing ourselves, anticipating potential responses, and stepping into these dialogues with clarity and courage.

Mentorship: Expanding Perspectives and Possibilities

Mentorship emerged as another cornerstone for career growth. But it's not just about finding mentors in our field; diversity in mentorship can offer varied perspectives and challenge our thinking. During the session, I provided a list of sample questions to use when interviewing a potential mentor, because not all leaders or managers make good mentors. We also discussed the value of mentors from different departments and with different personality types. This diversity helps us escape echo chambers, providing a rounded view of our career landscape.

Your career advancement will greatly benefit by choosing the right mentors. When interviewing potential mentors, remember: the mentee steers this relationship. It's about nurturing a connection that is mutually beneficial, yet primarily driven by the mentee's goals and needs. However, a word of caution: be wary of mentorship from your direct boss. While their guidance can be valuable, their advice may not always align with your best interests, given their inherent focus on organizational objectives. By selecting mentors judiciously, you equip yourself with a rich tapestry of wisdom and experience, crucial for your journey towards career excellence and transformation.

Networking and Organizational Interviews: Unearthing Hidden Opportunities

We also explored strategies like organizational interviews and networking initiatives like speed mentoring. These approaches not only broaden our professional network but also reveal hidden opportunities within our current organizations. They encourage us to be proactive, ask questions, and show genuine interest in others' roles, further solidifying our place as engaged and ambitious professionals.

Embracing All Personality Types: A DISC Analysis Approach

A deep dive into the DISC personality framework underscored the importance of understanding and collaborating with different personality types. Whether it's the decisive Dominance or the conscientiousness of the C-type personalities, appreciating these differences can enhance our communication strategies and our ability to navigate complex workplace dynamics. It’s very important to get the perspective of the personality type that is opposite of yours (Ds and Ss are opposites, as are Is and Cs) and welcome that conflict to overcome your biases and blindspots.

Exploring the Hidden Job Market: Strategies for Proactive Job Seeking

In the realm of career advancement, understanding and navigating the 'hidden job market' is a game-changer. The ideal time to apply for a job is before it becomes a public listing. Instead of battling in the 'red ocean' of advertised jobs, where competition is fierce, aim for the 'blue ocean' – unadvertised positions where opportunities are ripe yet less obvious. Building an 'intelligence' network is key in this pursuit. Cultivate relationships with executive assistants and office managers, as they often have invaluable insights into upcoming opportunities.

When exploring opportunities outside your current organization, the challenge intensifies, but it's not insurmountable. Conduct thorough research using tools like LinkedIn, organizational charts, marketing materials, and company websites. Leverage any contacts you have within your target company. They can be instrumental in identifying hiring officials and decision-makers, giving you an edge in accessing these hidden gems of the job market. This proactive, strategic approach to job hunting not only sets you apart from the competition but also aligns you with opportunities that are a better fit for your skills and career aspirations.

The Key Takeaway

This session was a call to action – to take ownership of our careers, to brave the uncomfortable conversations, to seek diverse mentorship, and to actively pursue opportunities within our reach. It's a journey of continuous learning, adapting, and growing, driven by our commitment to personal and professional development.
